Seasonal Health and Food Notes

Shokan and Azuki Beans

The current season from early to mid-January is called "Shokan" according to the 24 solar terms. "Shokan" means that the cold is not yet at its maximum, but the onset of the cold period deepens the chill even further. The period from this day until Setsubun is called "Kanno-uchi" and marks a time of severe cold. It is also a time when the hustle and bustle of the New Year has settled down. The 15th day of the first lunar month is the first full moon of the new year, and it is customary to celebrate by eating azuki rice porridge. This time, we will talk about azuki beans, an indispensable ingredient in Japanese celebrations.

Azuki beans are essential in the Japanese diet, used in red rice, azuki porridge, and as paste for Japanese sweets. Their widespread use is due to their medicinal properties, which suit the Japanese constitution and climate. Azuki beans are rich in potassium and dietary fiber, promoting improved bowel movements and diuresis, making them desirable for people living in Japan's humid climate. They also contain abundant vitamin B1, which is considered beneficial for fatigue recovery and stimulating appetite. There are many local dishes using azuki beans, such as "Nigome" from Hiroshima Prefecture, made by boiling azuki with taro, burdock, carrots, and green onions, seasoned with miso, and "Roppou-jiru" from Fukuoka Prefecture, seasoned sweet and savory with soy sauce and sugar. Additionally, "Kabocha Shiruko," made by adding steamed pumpkin dumplings to azuki soup, is highly nutritious and ideal for preventing colds, making it a perfect dessert for this season.

During this particularly cold season, warming acupuncture points such as the "Mingmen" behind the navel, the "Fengmen" at the center top of the shoulder blades, and the "Yongquan" at the middle top of the soles with disposable heat packs or massaging them in the bath may help with fatigue recovery and improving cold sensitivity.

The next issue of "e-Health Kawaraban" is scheduled to be delivered around February 20.
