Seasonal Foods and Health
Risshū (Beginning of Autumn)
Although the sun is strong and the days remain hot, after Obon, one can sense the presence of autumn even in the heat. The sunlight in the mornings and evenings gradually softens, and the occasional breeze brings a sense of coolness, characteristic of this season. The first seasonal indicator of Risshū is called "Suzukaze Itaru" (cool wind arrives), reflecting the Japanese sensitivity to subtle natural changes that signify the passage of seasons. Pears are one of the foods one wants to eat during this season. Pears are native to Japan and have been cultivated as fruit trees since ancient times. They are 90% water and have antipyretic properties, making them effective for lingering mild fevers from summer colds, sore throats from colds or tonsillitis, and skin issues.
Additionally, they contain asparagine acid, which helps with fatigue recovery. Fresh and crisp in texture, pears are delicious eaten raw, but can also be enjoyed in salads or cooked with sugar to make compote served with yogurt.
Even though the calendar marks Risshū, the hot days continue. Air conditioning is indispensable for daily life to prevent heatstroke, but for health, it is important to sweat and increase metabolism. It is recommended to take a proper bath instead of just a shower, or to engage in early morning walks or radio exercises.
The next "e-Health Newsletter" is scheduled to be distributed around September 20.
