Food and Health Seasonal Record

Bōshu (Grain in Ear)

Rice planting has reached its peak, and the fresh greenery of the fields uplifts the heart. As the rainy season approaches, there will be more rainy days, but listening to the croaking of frogs or the sound of rain provides a quiet sense of comfort and pleasantness unique to this season. "Bōshu" refers to the small protruding parts at the tips of grains such as rice, and the term signifies the period when the seeds of such grains are sown. The final phase of Bōshu is called "Ume no Mikibamu (Plums Turn Yellow)," when plums ripen and turn yellow, and the process of making pickled plums begins. Plum fruit has long been considered healthy and has been consumed in Japan since the Nara period. It is well known for its antibacterial effects and also has various benefits such as fatigue recovery from citric acid and liver function protection from picric acid. There are various processing methods such as plum wine and plum juice, but pickled plums are the easiest to incorporate. They are delicious as is, but can also be enjoyed in dishes like "Iwashi no Umeni" (sardines simmered with pickled plums, soy sauce, and mirin), "Umesu Ae" (chopped pickled plums mixed with sweet vinegar and combined with chicken breast, cucumber, or seaweed), or "Ume Sumashi Jiru" (soup with okra or tofu and broth), providing a refreshing plum flavor. During Bōshu, it is a season of heavy sweating, which can lead to internal heat causing inflammation or swelling, and may also trigger palpitations or shortness of breath. Sweat plays an important role in regulating body temperature and blood circulation.

During hot weather, while we tend to rely on showers, it is important to soak in a bath slowly to induce sweat from deep within the body, not just the surface, during this season.

The next "e-Health Kawaraban" is scheduled for distribution around July 22.
