由爱因斯坦医学院外科教授新谷弘美博士主讲，他因在全球推广基于预防医学的“神谷健康长寿法”而备受国内外期待，于9月4日在东京代代木日本钢铁代代木培训中心礼堂举办，由Healthy Wave主办。公司同意参加此次活动，并在当天展出了主要产品。
这场题为“如何生活而不生病”的讲座吸引了来自日本各地的众多访客，包括医疗专业人士。

我们美国本地子公司大和健康开发（DHD USA）于9月16日至18日在美国华盛顿会议中心举办的Natural Product Expo East展出。

予防医学に基づく「シンヤ健康長寿法」を世界に普及させ、国内外で期待されている新谷弘実博士（米国アルバート・アインシュタイン医科大学外科教授）の特別講演会が、９月４日、東京・代々木の新日鐵代々木研修センター講堂で開催され（ヘルシーウェーブ主催）、当社はこの企画に賛同し、当日会場に主要商品を出品しました。
「病気にならない生き方」と題した今回の講演には、全国から医療関係者など多数のお客様がつめかけました。
◎米国現地法人DHD USA社が展示会に出展
当社のアメリカ現地法人、Daiwa Health Development（DHD USA社)は、9月16～18日、アメリカ、ワシントンコンベンションセンターで開催されたNatural Product Expo Eastに出展しました。
自然食品の展示会としてはアメリカ最大規模を誇るこのイベントは、関連企業や医薬・食品業界の評価も高く、春秋併せて出展企業は1,200社、入場者は約40,000人にのぼります。
同社では、マーケットのニーズを先取りしてリニューアルした米ぬかアラビノキシラン誘導体含有製品「PeakImmune4」を7月に上市し、店頭販売向け代理店を通して全米の自然食品店へ配荷を開始しました。
またサプリメント専門の全米チェーン店への配荷も始まり、店頭販売が本格的にスタートしました。
今回の出展の目的は、「PeakImmune4」の全米自然食品店への告知と、認知度の向上、配荷率の向上でしたが、期間中多くの小売店がブースに立ち寄るなど反響が大きく、初期の目的は十分達成できました。
また同社では、来年の3月アナハイムで開催される、Natural Product Expo Westにも出展の予定で、準備を進めています。
◎専門書「機能性糖質素材の開発と食品への応用」で主要２素材が掲載
食品素材の研究者や商品開発担当者などを対象とした専門書が発行され、当社の２素材が詳しく解説されています。
「機能性糖質素材の開発と食品への応用」（シーエムシー出版発行）と題したこの書籍は、京都大学大学院農学研究科・井上國世教授の監修のもと、現在食品分野で活躍する高度な機能をもつ糖質素材を厳選し、それぞれについて、素材の物性や製造法、生理活性、作用機序、研究開発状況、実用化状況、食品分野における展望を解説しているものです。
当社については、第２章と第３章で次の２商品が採りあげられました。
第２章 米ぬかアラビノキシラン誘導体（バイオブラン)の機能性と食品への応用
第３章 粘質性多糖ケフィランの生理機能と食品への応用
米ぬかアラビノキシラン誘導体（バイオブラン）は、エビデンスが豊富なことなどにより国内外での評価が高く、すでに世界30カ国で販売実績があります。
ケフィランについては、乳由来ではなく、米を原料とした画期的なもので、これは農林水産省の委託を受けて研究が終了し、まもなく商品化予定です。

【1】ヘリコバクター・ピロリ菌
ピロリ菌という言葉が、最近かなり一般的になってきました。
これは正しくはヘリコバクター・ピロリ菌といい、長さがおよそ４ミクロンの右巻きにねじれた形をしたラセン菌で、1982年にオーストラリアの学者に発見されたもので、まだ20年ちょっとしか経っていません。
この菌が胃潰瘍や十二指腸潰瘍の原因となっているということが近年明らかになり、注目されるようになったのです。
これらの病気は、ストレスの多い現代にあってはまさにビジネスマンの職業病とさえいわれています。ピロリ菌は、胃の粘膜を好み、その粘液の下で胃酸から逃れて棲みついています。
胃潰瘍や十二指腸潰瘍の患者について、ピロリ菌を除去することによって治ったり再発しなくなるということが、たくさんの症例で明らかになっています。
さて、ピロリ菌が病気の元凶とあっては、その感染の有無を確認し、認められた場合には除菌治療が必要となってきます。
幸いなことに、2000年11月からピロリ菌除菌治療が、胃潰瘍、十二指腸潰瘍の患者に健康保険が適用されるようになりましたので、患者の負担は以前より軽くなりました。
これにより、この治療を受ける人の数も急増しています。
また、内視鏡やバリウムの検査の結果、胃潰瘍とか十二指腸潰瘍と診断されたときにピロリ菌の検査をして、もし存在が認められたときには取り除いてしまう、といった治療も最近では普通になってきました。
また、除菌治療をする病医院も多くなっています。
ピロリ菌の除菌については、もちろん医師の指示に従うことになりますが、薬の服用となります。近頃は、胃潰瘍や十二指腸潰瘍を防ぐために、検査をしてピロリ菌を取り除いてしまう人も増えているそうです。
これも、予防医学のひとつでしょうか。
なお、ピロリ菌を発見した西オーストラリア大学のバリー・マーシャル教授と、病理学者のロビン・ウォーレン博士の２氏に、２００５年ノーベル医学生理学賞の授賞が決まりました。

第20回 亜鉛と前立腺がん論争
「亜鉛は前立腺がんのリスクを低下させる」「リスクが2倍になる」
――米国では亜鉛と前立腺がんとの関連をめぐって意見が分かれています。
今月発表のレスリー・コステロ氏（メリーランド大学）の論文によると、これまでの議論は次のように整理されます。
▽食習慣の変化によって、通常、高齢男性において亜鉛不足になりやすくなっているため、サプリメントの摂取は重要である
▽亜鉛サプリメントの過量摂取は進行前立腺がんのリスクを増大させる一因となっているかもしれない
▽疫学研究では亜鉛の効果は、食事から、サプリメントからともに、未知の多因子の複合的効果との結論に至っている
――など論文で同氏は、正常なあるいはがんになった前立腺における亜鉛の取り込みに関する研究結果の解明や、亜鉛を補給した場合の吸収や利用率、有害性などの理解が重要だと述べています。
そして、疫学研究や比較臨床試験が必要だと呼びかけました。
この問題に限らず、統合医療の手段や方法に対して統一した見解が得られていないことは珍しくありません。
選択する際には、専門家とともによく情報を吟味し、効果と安全性を確認しながら利用することが大切です。

「芸術の秋」の続きです。高校時代の部活仲間がフラメンコダンサーになり、先日高円寺まで鑑賞に行きました。ダンサーは3人でギターと歌にあわせてフラメンコを披露しますが、表情と姿勢の良さに鳥肌が立ちました。何か心身から打ち込めるものがあると顔つきが違います。

A special lecture by Dr. Hiromi Shintani (Professor of Surgery at Albert Einstein University School of Medicine), who is highly anticipated both domestically and internationally for promoting the "Shinya Health Longevity Method" based on preventive medicine worldwide, was held on September 4 at the Nippon Steel Yoyogi Training Center Auditorium in Yoyogi, Tokyo, hosted by Healthy Wave. This book, titled "Development of Functional Carbohydrate Materials and Their Application to Food" (published by CMC Publishing), is supervised by Professor Kuniyo Inoue of Kyoto University Graduate School of Agriculture. It carefully selects carbohydrate materials with advanced functions currently active in the food field, explaining the physical properties of the materials, manufacturing methods, physiological activity, mechanisms of action, research and development status, practical application, and prospects in the food field.
Regarding our company, the following two products were covered in Chapters 2 and 3.

[1] Helicobacter pylori
The term 'H. pylori' has become quite common recently.
This is correctly called Helicobacter pylori bacteria, a Lazen fungus about 4 microns long with a twisted shape to the right. It was discovered by Australian researchers in 1982, and it has only been around for a little over 20 years.
It has recently become clear that this bacterium is a cause of gastric and duodenal ulcers, attracting attention.
These diseases are even considered occupational diseases of businessmen in today's stressful world. Helicobacter pylori prefers the stomach lining and evades stomach acid beneath its mucus.
In many cases, it has been shown that removing H. pylori can either cure or prevent recurrence in patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers.
Now, since Helicobacter pylori is the root cause of the disease, it is necessary to check for infection and, if confirmed, disinfectant treatment is necessary.
Fortunately, since November 2000, H. pylori eradication treatment has been covered by health insurance for patients with gastric and duodenal ulcers, reducing the burden on patients compared to before.
As a result, the number of people receiving this treatment has surged.
Also, when endoscopy or barium tests show a diagnosis of gastric or duodenal ulcer, it has become common to test for Helicobacter pylori and remove it if its presence is found.
Additionally, many clinics are offering sterilization treatments.
Of course, you should follow your doctor's instructions for H. pylori sterilization, but medication will be required.
Recently, it seems that more people are having tests and eliminating H. pylori bacteria to prevent stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers.
Could this also be considered a form of preventive medicine?
Furthermore, Professor Barry Marshall of the University of Western Australia, who discovered H. pylori, and pathologist Dr. Robin Warren were awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

20th Edition: Zinc and Prostate Cancer Controversy
"Zinc reduces the risk of prostate cancer" / "The risk doubles"
— In the United States, opinions are divided regarding the relationship between zinc and prostate cancer.
According to a paper by Leslie Costello (University of Maryland) published this month, the discussions so far can be summarized as follows:
▽ Due to changes in dietary habits, older men are generally more prone to zinc deficiency, making the intake of supplements important.
▽ Excessive intake of zinc supplements may be one factor increasing the risk of advanced prostate cancer.
▽ Epidemiological studies have concluded that the effects of zinc, both from diet and supplements, are a result of the combined effects of multiple unknown factors.
— In the paper, the author emphasizes the importance of clarifying research results on zinc uptake in normal or cancerous prostates, as well as understanding the absorption, utilization, and potential harm when zinc is supplemented.
The author also called for epidemiological studies and comparative clinical trials.
Not just in this case, but it is not uncommon for there to be no unified views on the methods and measures of integrative medicine.
When choosing, it is crucial to carefully examine the information with experts and confirm both efficacy and safety before use.

Continuing with the "Autumn of Art," a high school club friend became a flamenco dancer, and I recently went to see her performance in Koenji. The three dancers performed flamenco accompanied by guitar and singing, and I got goosebumps from the expressions and posture.
