To strengthen sales in the North American market, we will establish a wholly owned subsidiary, DHD USA INC., in Los Angeles, USA, within this month.

Our flagship product, BioBrann, is used by many medical institutions across the United States and enjoys high trust and support. The purpose of establishing this local subsidiary is to strengthen our support system, establish new sales channels, and meet diverse needs.

We are also considering market development in South America.

This marks the establishment of our third overseas subsidiary, following DHD (EUROPE) Co., Ltd., founded in Cambridge, UK in 2000, and SIAM DHD Co., Ltd., founded in Bangkok, Thailand in 2002.

Both the DHDs in the UK and Thailand, which are already in operation, are steadily achieving results, and in addition to strengthening local sales, we are actively conducting joint research and exchanging information with local universities and research institutions. In addition, our new expansion in the United States, the world's largest market and a leading country in supplements, is expected to contribute not only to strengthening our sales capabilities but also to gathering live information and developing new products.

Following Bio Blanc, our company has established a production and supply system for its in-house developed materials, "NKCP" and "Komeke Philan," and on this occasion, we will begin full-scale sales in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, using our local subsidiary as a base.

◎ [Preview] Exhibiting purified nut fungus cultures (NKCP) at the American exhibition 'SSW'

Our company will exhibit at SSW ("8th annual SUPPLY SIDE WEST"), a functional food ingredients exhibition scheduled to be held in Las Vegas, USA from September 29~October 1, mainly showcasing and introducing nut culture (NKCP).

SSW is the world's largest exhibition with 680 exhibitors, and we will continue to participate last year with the aim of expanding the sales of refined natto culture (NKCP) in the United States.

In the United States, which has the largest market for health foods, interest in soybeans and their processed foods—especially natto—has recently increased, so we see great potential for the future of NKCP.

In addition to product exhibitions, we plan to present a presentation by Dr. Issugi from Dokkyo Medical University on October 1.

◎ "Bio Bran Workshops" held in three Southeast Asian countries

This July, our company held the "Bio Bran Workshop" in three countries: Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.

Hosted by a local distributor and supported by our company, Dr. M. Gornam (UCLA/DREW University professor), one of the developers of the company's main product "BioBlanc" and a global authority in immunology, also attended. The lecture, Q&A session, and successful conclusion at each venue included a lecture.

The forum held in Malaysia on Tuesday, July 27, was themed "New Approaches to Cancer Treatment—The NK Activation and Apoptotic Effects of Biobran Drugs."

About 80 people attended, including doctors and healthcare professionals.

Dr. Gornam's lecture, including the latest cases, was well received, and the subsequent Q&A session lasted over an hour, far exceeding the scheduled time.

At the seminar for doctors and researchers held in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday the 29th (co-hosted by the country's government-affiliated organization NIA = National Innovation Agency), about 100 people attended.

Here too, attendees attracted attention to Dr. Gornam's lecture.

In Thailand, a seminar for the general public was held in succession. More than 80 attendees listened attentively to the lectures and Q&A.

On Saturday the 31st, a similar seminar will be held in Singapore.

More than 80 attendees, mainly doctors, attended Dr. Gornam's lecture, presentations on joint research by the doctor and three other physicians, and panel discussions.

Additionally, all three countries held press conferences simultaneously, mainly featuring major newspapers and industry papers.

In particular, Dr. Gornam attended in Malaysia and Singapore, delivering lectures and engaging in high-level Q&A sessions, demonstrating the depth of media interest in BioBlanc.

Our company hopes to continue hosting workshops of this type regularly in more countries and make them more regular.

◎ Special lecture at the 4th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Integrative Medicine, 6th Japan Conference on Substitution, Complementary and Traditional Medicine

The Japan Society for Functional Food Research (JAFRA), of which Daiwa Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. is a member, gave a special lecture at the "4th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Integrative Medicine and the 6th Joint Meeting of the Japan Council of Alternative, Complementary, and Traditional Medicine Hokkaido Branch," held at the Hokkaido University Academic Exchange Hall from July 31 (Sat) ~ August 1 (Sun).

At this conference, themed "Integrative Medicine in the 21st Century—A New Path for Coexistence of Western Medicine and Alternative Complementary Traditional Medicine," JAFRA Senior Researcher Hiroaki Maeda raised issues under the theme "The Concept and Global Standard of Food Function Evaluation Methods" on the current state of food function evaluation in Japan.

In the lecture, it was first demonstrated that one of the main causes of the increase in lifestyle-related diseases and cancer patients in developed countries is the high level of food refinement.

In recent years, in Japan, the prevailing view has become that food components should be evaluated as dynamic functions in relation to the body after ingestion. However, in most cases, these components are removed during food processing as substances that degrade the quality, taste, and texture of food.

While drugs mainly aim to remove pathogenic substances, the food function refers to the actions of food components in maintaining and improving nutritional status, and thus serving as life-sustaining effects. Therefore, drugs are used in treatment, while food functions support curing, presenting his views on the distinction between drugs and food.

Finally, Chief Researcher Maeda touched on the functional food bio-bran (rice bran arabinoxylane derivative), which he was involved in developing, and concluded that it has reached a certain level as a food ingredient useful for immune enhancement.

◎ Presentation of research results on "HRB" and "NKCP" at the 21st Annual Meeting of the Japanese and Chinese Medicine Society

The 21st Annual Conference of the Japanese and Chinese Medicine Society was held on August 21 (Sat)~22 (Sun) at the Toyama International Conference Center and Toyama Civic Plaza, where our company presented new research findings on the effects of "rice bran extract hydrolysate (HRB)" and "natto bacteria culture purified product" during a general lecture. In addition, we held a poster exhibition for "rice bran extract hydrolyzed."

This year's conference was held with the main theme of "Aiming to establish holistic medicine that skillfully utilizes the laws and blessings of nature," and with each edition, the medical society conference attracted widespread attention, and once again in its 21st edition, the packed venue was filled with excitement.

Our society mainly focuses on studying the efficacy of Japanese and Chinese medicines, but in recent years, we have also begun to examine the efficacy of naturally derived foods with functional properties.

The presentation topics for this event are as follows.

◎ Participation in the 'Food Communication Conference' event

I participated in the 'Food Communication Conference' (commonly known as 'Shokokkomi') held at Tokyo University of Agriculture (Setagaya-ku, Tokyo) on Thursday, August 26, continuing from last time.

This is a network where the Setagaya Public Health Center in Tokyo collaborates with wards, residents, universities, companies, and NPOs to promote "food education" (promoting health through proper food). Our company supports this purpose and has participated since its establishment.

The main theme this time was to learn about vegetables harvested in Setagaya Ward, cook them, and taste them to make them familiar to residents. However, since this year is the United Nations' "International Year of Rice" (a campaign to raise international awareness to protect rice), we presented an exhibition from the perspective of rice processors.

Our main products, such as 'Rice Bran Arabinoxylane Derivative' (Bio Bran) and the soon-to-be-commercialized 'Rice Kefilan,' were developed with a focus on the usefulness of rice, which has long been closely linked to Japanese dietary habits.

At this exhibition as well, attendees praised the company's sincere attitude as a company and the safety and reliability involved in development and manufacturing.

◎ Published another paper in the pharmaceutical journal 'Pharmacology and Clinical Practice'

In the July issue (Vol. 14, No. 4) of the leading pharmaceutical journal 'Pharmacology and Clinical Practice' (published by Iiyaku Shuppan), our company published a new paper on clinical data for BioBlanc.

Regarding the journal, the previous issue (No. 3) featured five papers centered on Bioblan at once, drawing attention from various fields, but this time it follows that topic.

This study examined the complementary effects of long-term administration of "rice bran arabinoxylane derivative (BioBrann)" to patients with chronic rheumatoid arthritis who mainly receive symptomatic therapy using steroids, analgesics, and hyperthermia.

We will present our new ingredient "Rice Kephilan," following "Bio Blanc" and "NKCP," in a complete six-part series.

Part 1... Introduction

~The legendary nutritional source delivered by rice in an era of health consciousness~

In the Caucasus, one of the world's longest-lived regions, fermented milk kefir was once considered a secret to the public.

The characteristic lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus kefirano faciens (hereafter referred to as L. kefirano fasiens) from the kefir substance "Kefir grains" produces a distinctive mucous polysaccharide kefiran.

Kefiran has long been noted for its many physiological functions, but the technology for mass production had not yet been established.

Daiwa Yakusen quickly recognized the usefulness of kefiran as a functional food ingredient, and using its proprietary technology to cultivate L. kefilanophaciens using rice—the staple food of Japanese people—successfully achieved efficient production of plant-based kefiran. This enabled its use in a wide range of fields, including health foods and general foods< > continued.

[Domestic Information] About the relationship between personality and cancer

About the relationship between personality and cancer

A study has announced that thin Japanese men have up to a 29% higher cancer incidence rate compared to men with a standard body type. This was based on a large-scale epidemiological study by a research team at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. While obesity has previously pointed out a higher risk of cancer, it was shown that being thin also increases the risk of cancer (newspapers around August 20).

Various studies have been conducted on cancer, but the results of a recent survey by Tohoku University on "personality and cancer" were reported in the journal of the National Cancer Institute in the United States, attracting worldwide attention.

A group from the university's Department of Public Health conducted a seven-year follow-up study of 30,277 men and women aged 40~64 living in 14 towns and villages in Miyagi Prefecture. The results showed that personality traits such as "neurotic tendencies," "extraversion-introversion," "deviant tendencies," and "conscientiousness" are not related to cancer risk.

At the time of the survey, among those already diagnosed with cancer, the group with a strong "neurotic tendency" had a higher proportion of such individuals. However, for those who had no prior cancer history but later developed new cancer cases, the analysis showed no difference in cancer incidence rates between the groups with strong and weak neurotic tendencies.

This suggests that while 'neurotic tendencies' tend to strengthen as a result of cancer, cancer does not necessarily develop because of 'neurotic tendencies.'

This research is said to be the largest in terms of personality and cancer, but many challenges still remain.

From now on, you won't have to worry or worry unnecessarily about things like "Am I prone to cancer?"

[Overseas Information] ... Overseas Integrative Medicine News, Part 7

Multivitamins slow the progression of HIV infection.

Data showing the potential of integrative medicine in developing countries has been released, so let me introduce it.

In a clinical trial conducted in Tanzania, Africa, with an average follow-up period of 61.4 months, 271 pregnant women infected with HIV were given multivitamins, and their disease progression was reduced compared to the placebo group of 267.

It was also found that digestive symptoms such as mouth ulcers, nausea, and diarrhea that reduce appetite and lower quality of life (such as mouth ulcers, nausea, and diarrhea) were alleviated.

The research group believes that multivitamin intake boosted immune function, and that the antioxidant effects of vitamins C and E reduced viral replication.

It has long been said that because AIDS medication is expensive, some people do not benefit from it.

On the other hand, it is also true that taking anti-AIDS medication can cause various side effects.

While multivitamins alone cannot overcome AIDS, incorporating them into treatment can slow disease progression and delay the start of anti-AIDS medication.

Moreover, the multivitamin used in the trial costs about $15 per year (approximately 1,700 yen).

This confirms the importance of using the benefits of both supplements and pharmaceuticals.

The formula used in this trial was vitamin B1 20mg, B2 20mg, B6 25mg, niacin 100mg, vitamin B12 50μg, vitamin C 500mg, vitamin E 30mg, and folic acid 800μg (all daily doses). In this study, the results showed that it is better not to include vitamin A in multivitamins.

■ Series ... Part 7: Four Rules for Getting a Good Night's Sleep

We spend one-third of our lives sleeping for rest.

This time is precisely the driving force for fulfilling daily activities during the remaining two-thirds of the time.

The sleep mechanism consists of non-REM sleep and REM sleep.

When you fall asleep on the floor, you experience the deepest sleep in terms of brain waves.

This is non-REM sleep, also known as "brain sleep."

Following this deep sleep comes REM sleep for only a short time (about 10 minutes).

REM sleep is often called "dreamy sleep," and because the tension in muscles such as the hands and feet is completely released, it is also called "physical sleep."

The difficulty of getting good sleep is caused by the decline in the quality of this non-REM sleep.

The first tip for getting a good night's sleep is to stay active during the day.

The second is to wake up at a set time in the morning and get plenty of light.

Third, prepare for bed around 14 hours after waking up.

In other words, stop consuming caffeine. Soak in warm water at your leisure.

This involves effectively using sounds, scents, and colors that provide pleasant stimulation to the five senses.

And fourth, if good sleep cannot be achieved despite these efforts, it is recommended that middle-aged and older adults consult their regular doctor to receive an appropriate prescription for sleep medication.
