◎ Research on new effects of biobran presented in Slovakia

A new paper has been published on Daiwa Yakuhin's flagship product, 'BioBranc,' on the maturation-promoting effects of dendritic cells. This paper, titled 'Enhancement of Growth of Human Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells by BioBranc,' summarizes research results conducted at the Tumor Immunology Laboratory of the Slovak Academy of Sciences Cancer Research Society, and has discovered new possibilities for 'Biobran.'

Dendritic cells (DCs), as the name suggests, are cells that extend their branch-like fingers (protrusions) in all directions, serving to bridge information about foreign substances (viruses, bacteria, cancer, etc.) to immune cells (such as lymphocytes).

This reaction, which transmits (presents) information about foreign substances (antigens) entering the body to immune cells, is called antigen presentation, stimulates activation of immune cells, and these activated immune cells then eliminate the foreign substance. This paper clarifies that "BioBrann" promotes the maturation of dendritic cells, which play an extremely important role in ecological defense responses. This research is expected to have applications of "BioBrann" in new immunotherapies and other fields.

Furthermore, "Bio Blanc" has already obtained manufacturing patent patents in nine countries, including Japan, the United States, and various European nations, establishing itself as a worldwide product originating from Japan. Currently, it has sales in 46 countries.

■ Latest Information on Integrative Medicine [38]

Integrative Medicine for Dementia

Dementia is a representative disease that requires an integrative medical approach, including Western medicine, herbal medicine, functional foods, behavioral therapy, and community care.

Dementia consists of core symptoms and peripheral symptoms. Core symptoms include "memory impairment," "loss of time and place of date," and "decline in thinking and judgment."

Peripheral symptoms include "wandering," "excitement," and "delusions." There is an oral medication called donepezil that works for core symptoms, but it is only symptomatic treatment and does not address the root cause of the disease. On the other hand, there is currently no treatment for peripheral symptoms recognized by health insurance.

Recently, the effectiveness of a Kampo medicine called Yokukansan has been demonstrated for the peripheral symptoms of dementia. After continuing Yokgansan for four weeks, the score for evaluating peripheral symptoms decreased. It is speculated that it suppresses the activity of substances in the body that transmit excitement, and conversely, facilitates the action of substances that suppress excitement.

Yamabushitake, a type of mushroom, has also been reported to be effective for peripheral symptoms when taken as a supplement. This is said to promote the synthesis of nerve growth factor and suppress the toxicity of amyloid β protein, which is believed to cause Alzheimer's-type dementia.
