On Sunday, October 28, our company held the "3rd Pharmacy and Pharmacy Seminar" in Shinagawa.

This time, continuing from last time, Mr. Kazufumi Komatsu of Komatsu Pharmaceutical (headquartered in Ibaraki Prefecture) explained under the theme "The Development, Maturation, and Decline of the Immune System That Protects the Body III," providing a review of the previous session by providing concrete examples such as the evolution of immune cells by age group, the close relationship between the gut and brain, diseases and nutritional intake levels. He emphasized the importance of reviewing dietary balance daily even a little, maintaining good gut immunity and the lymphatic system, and ensuring proper nutrient absorption, leading to lively Q&A.

Following this, Hisayoshi Kato, Head of Research and Development at our company, provided a detailed explanation of a study from McMaster University in Canada confirming that the molecular weight distribution and absorbency of their company's Biobran remain in the blood continuously for several hours after oral administration, as confirmed by quantitative blood responses in mice. He also introduced examples of Biobran use in alternative medicine settings such as UCLA/Drew Medical School in the United States and domestic clinics.

Furthermore, our company will continue to widely disseminate accurate health-related information about our products and strengthen communication with pharmacy and drugstore professionals as well as medical professionals by holding lectures and workshops, including the fourth seminar.

[21] Soy Suppresses Prostate Cancer Progression

Opinions differ on whether soy intake prevents prostate cancer, but promising new results have emerged. In a six-month trial, the group that continued soy protein intake had their prostate cancer progression suppressed. This was reported by Professor Mindy Carter from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota, USA, who recently visited Japan.

The results are expected to be published soon in a specialized journal (Nutrition and Cancer).

Thirty-eight patients with high-risk "precancerous lesions" for prostate cancer were randomly divided into a soy protein group or a milk protein group and were asked to consume each twice daily for six months. The soy group consumed 107 mg/day of isoflavones (functional components found in soy). Meanwhile, the milk group consumed the same amount of protein (40 g), but without isoflavones.

As a result, progression to prostate cancer occurred in 6 out of 16 cases in the milk group, whereas only 1 out of 16 cases progressed in the soy group.

Isoflavones act similarly to female hormones in the body, so they may be effective in preventing the onset of prostate cancer, which involves male hormones. However, "These results cannot be applied to everyone. Large-scale research in the future is awaited," said Professor Kurzer.

■Editor's Note

On October 28, I attended a pharmacy and drugstore seminar as staff.

I heard interesting stories from Professor Komatsu, such as how metabolic syndrome, which can lead to diseases like colorectal cancer and cerebral infarction, is increasing as people move away from rice consumption. During the lecture, I realized there were many aspects of my own diet that needed improvement, which gave me a wake-up call. I will try to be mindful of excessive salt and oil intake, avoid unbalanced menus, and aim for a well-balanced diet with moderate portions.
