■ World Health Report

A randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted by Dean Ornish, Director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, a U.S. non-profit organization, and others, showed that combining healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise helps maintain cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or early-stage dementia. In this RCT, about 71% of patients who participated in a lifestyle improvement program that combined a healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management experienced stabilization or improvement of dementia symptoms without medication. In contrast, in the control group that did not make these lifestyle improvements, about 68% of patients experienced worsening symptoms. Details of this trial were published in "Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy" on June 7. Ornish and colleagues explained, "This is the first study to show that lifestyle improvements can influence the progression of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease."

The next issue of "Health Kawaraban" is scheduled to be distributed around August 20, 2024.
