■ Touring Japan Through Food – Journey of Local Cuisine
Due to popular demand, the series "Touring Japan Through Food – Journey of Local Cuisine" will resume as an irregular serialization starting with this month's issue.
This time, we talk about 'Minazuki,' which is fitting for June.
Minazuki (Kyoto)
As the rainy season begins and the humid weather continues, how is everyone doing?
Though we welcomed the New Year with fresh feelings, if we glance at the calendar, it’s already June. Half of this year has already passed. Many people are likely feeling deeply aware of how quickly time flies.
In June, Japanese confectionery shops display the cool-looking "Minazuki." In Kyoto, there has long been a custom of enjoying a Japanese sweet called 'Minazuki,' which is a triangular-cut white "Uirou" topped with cooked red beans during June. In the Heian period, the imperial court held a summer heat-relieving event called the "Himuro Festival" on the 1st day of the 6th month in the lunar calendar, where ice preserved in icehouses was eaten. At that time, ice was extremely valuable, so among the common people, a 'Minazuki' resembling ice came to be eaten. The triangle shape of Minazuki represents a piece of ice, and the red beans scattered on top are said to serve the purpose of warding off evil spirits.
At this time of year, a traditional ritual called "Nagoshi no Harae" is also held. Many may notice a large ring of cogon grass, taller than an adult, set up at the approach to shrines. On the last day of June, halfway through the year, people pass through the cogon grass ring to cleanse themselves of accumulated impurities and misfortunes, praying for good health and safety for the remaining half of the year.
As the days grow more humid and managing your health becomes more challenging, why not reflect on the traditional summer heat-relief customs and try passing through a "cogon grass ring" and enjoying a "Minazuki"? May everyone spend the remaining six months in good health!
The next "Health Kawaraban" is scheduled to be distributed around July 24, 2023.
